The Thrill of the Hunt

Bubble-net feeding is perhaps the most famous behavior associated with humpback whales. In this, a group of whales blows bubbles while swimming in a circle. This creates a ring of bubbles underneath the krill that is their prey. Once they’ve rounded up their food, the whales shoot upward through the bubble net with their mouths open, swallowing thousands of fish in one gulp.

Jon shoots this behavior in Alaska, where the whales go to feed. Images range from daytime to early evening, and this amazing natural phenomenon can be seen against the northern sky. See more photos of humpback whales breaching, aerials, blows, tails and underwater.
