Information about rodents

Rodents (from Latin rodere, “to gnaw”) are mammals of the order Rodentia. Because gnawing is such a big part of their lives, these animals have big and ever-growing teeth. All members of this order display a single pair of continuously-0growing incisors in both their upper and lower jaws.

Amazingly, about 40% of all mammal species on earth are rodents. For this reason, vast numbers live on all continents except Antarctica.

This family of mammals is diverse. They can live in trees, in underground burrows, or even be semiaquatic. Well-known members of this family include mice, rats, squirrels, prairie dogs, chipmunks, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and capybaras.

In terms of appearance, most rodents are small, with robust bodies, short limbs, and long tails. Finally, they tend to be social animals. Many species live in societies with complex webs of communication.
