Majestic Fountains

Since Humpback whales are marine mammals, they breathe air, just like humans do. Unlike humans’, though, he whale’s respiratory system is one of the most efficient in the world. Humpback whales come to the surface to blow out old air and take in fresh oxygen every 10-15 minutes.

Jon shoots these amazing creatures in Alaska, where he enjoys the sights and sounds of of humpbacks in pairs or alone, spouting at different times of day. During the day, the whale’s mist resembles a geyser. Meanwhile, after sunset, the blow looks like smoke on the water.
