Hoozdo Hahoodzo

The Navajo called the area now known as Arizona “Hoozdo Hahoodzo.” This phrase comes, in part, from the word “hoozdo,” meaning “warm area.” As the name suggests, this state is warm and dry. It displays a range of characteristics that bring together aspects of the Southwestern, Western and the Mountain states.

Arizona  borders with New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, and Mexico. In fact, at one point it meets the southwestern corner of Colorado! Its border with Mexico is 389 miles long, and runs along both Sonora and Baja California.

The most famous site in this state, the Grand Canyon is a colorful, deep, steep-sided gorge. Over eons, the Colorado River carved this canyon from red and yellow stone. Additionally, this state boasts the Basin and Range region, whose landscape is rich in a xerophyte plants such as the cactus.

This state is home to some of the most unusual flora and fauna in the continental United States. Vast and intimate landscapes, as well as earthy and otherworldly vistas lie in wait.
