The Rich Coast
Costa Rica (Spanish for “Rich Coast”) is a country in Central America. Nicaragua borders it to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south. Despite its population of around 4.9 million, it’s a land area is only 51,060 square kilometers. Over 300,000 people live in the capital and largest city, San José.
This country is located primarily on the Central American isthmus. However, it also includes several islands. Of these, Cocos Island stands out because of its distance from the continental landmass. However, Isla Calero is the largest of the country’s islands.
Because Costa Rica is located between 8 and 12 degrees north of the Equator, the climate is tropical year round. However, the country has many microclimates depending on elevation, rainfall, topography, and by the geography of each particular region. Due to all this diversity, this country possesses the greatest density of species in the world. These include a variety of amphibians, birds, primates, and sloths.
