Peaks and Valleys

Located between the Big Island and Molokai, Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. During the island’s creation, two nearby volcanoes rose from the ocean and poured lava into the water. Their flows overlapped. Eventually, this created side-by-side mountains with an isthmus between. Because of this phenomenon, the island is covered in ravines and creases, giving this island it’s nickname, “The Valley Island.”

The older, western, volcano forms the West Maui Mountains. To the east, Haleakala Volcano dominates Haleakala National Park. At more than 10,000 ft (3,050 m) above sea level, this summit stretches 5 miles (8 km) from the ocean floor.

Some of the island’s best photography lies on the beaches south of Makena, Iao Valley State Park, and the Dragon’s Teeth north of Lahaina. Also, ascenic road with hundreds of twists and turns leads east to the Hana Coast. Photographers visiting Hana should not miss Waianapanapa State Park or Kaihalulu (Red Sand) beach.
