Lovely Lanai

Lanai (or “The Pineapple Island”) is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. This comma-shaped crescent stretches only 18 miles, but once contained the world’s largest pineapple plantation. The final harvest took place in 1992. Since then, the island has been home both tourism and ecologically-friendly agriculture.

Though small, the island boasts fantastic sites for the adventurous traveler. For example, the famous Puu Pehe or “Sweetheart Rock” is situated 150 feet (50m) offshore. It’s location between Manele Bay and Hulopoe Bay requires four-wheel drive, but is worth every bounce along the rocky dirt road.

Another famous site, Keahikawelo or “Garden of the Gods,” features boulders of varying sizes, shapes, and colors that are the result of thousands of years of erosion. Jon travels there regularly to catch these natural formations at varying times of day and night.

With views of both Molokai and Maui, this island offers a small but perfect vantage point to see the Hawaiian archipelago.
