Northern Sea Circuit
Hokkaido, formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso, is the second largest island of Japan. It’s also the country’s largest and most northern prefecture.
Lying just under the island of Sakhalin, Russia, this island boasts three different subspecies of brown bear. In fact, there are are more brown bears here than anywhere else in Asia besides Russia.
Photographers prize this area especially for its abundance of Steller’s sea eagles, white tailed eagles, and Whooper swans, as well as for it’s population of the endangered red crowned crane.
Native conifer species in this region include the Abies Sachalinensis (sakhalin fir). Also, the hydrangea hirta species grows here, sheltered on this snow-covered island.
