Nordic Island
Iceland is an island country of Europe located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 332,529 and an area of 103,000 km2, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. This and the surrounding areas in the southwest are home to over two-thirds of the population.
Photographers voyage to this area because of its volcanic and geologic activity. This country’s interior consists of a plateau characterized by sand and lava fields, as well as mountains, and glaciers. Meanwhile, many glacial rivers flow through the lowlands to the sea.
The Gulf Stream warms the island, and gives it a temperate climate. For this reason, Iceland is warmer than its a near-Arctic latitude would suggest. However, summers here are still chilly, and most of the island still has a tundra climate.
Vast colonies of Atlantic puffins nest in the rugged seacliffs and many species of ceteceans feed in its nutrient rich waters. This icy region boasts volcanoes, glaciers and waterfalls like no other place in the world.
