Flowing Fire
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located on the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, The Big Island. Hawaii‘s most famous attraction, this park offers rainforests, hiking trails, and at times flowing lava! The park encompasses 230,000 acres and covers an area from sea level to the summit of Mauna Loa.
When the lava flows, photographers flock from all over the world to catch a shot of the glowing ripples. However, this attraction includes more than just the volcano. Over 90% of the flora and fauna in this park are found only in the Hawaiian islands. This level of endemism surpasses all other places on Earth—even the Galápagos.
Due to it’s massive size, this park is home to myriad endemic bird species. Hawaiian honeycreepers dot in the trees. Meanwhile, the nene (or Hawaiian goose) burrows in brush. Along the cliffs, the Hawaiian hawk (or ‘io) circles overhead, in search of prey.
Some of the best locations to photograph in this park include the Kilauea caldera and the Pu’u Oo Vent. Because the eruption is constantly changing, access to the park shifts as lava forms and re-forms new land on the island.
