Sun and Sea
This region, known officially as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an archipelagic state located in the Atlantic Ocean between Cuba and south Florida. Part of the Lucayan Archipelago, it consists of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets.
The islands’ torquise waters and white-sand beaches draw tourists and photographers alike. Due to it’s tropical savannah climate and low latitude, this region experiences a warm and winterless climate. Though summer is the wettest season, the Bahamas enjoy 340 days of sunlight annually.
All the islands are low and flat, with ridges that usually rise no more than 15 to 20 m (49 to 66 ft). The highest point is Mount Alvernia (formerly Como Hill) on Cat Island. It has an elevation of 63 metres (207 ft).
Fish abound here, visible through the crystal clear waters. Beyond that, puffy clouds shelter islands, giving them a brief respite from the sun. Atlantic spotted dolphins, lemon sharks, and tiger sharks live in the waters offshore.
