Carcharhinus longimanus

The oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) is a large requiem shark inhabiting tropical and warm temperate seas. Stocky in build, this shark displays white-tipped, rounded fins.

Though this shark can be slow-moving, it attacks in feeding frenzies. Therefore, it can be a danger to shipwreck or air crash survivors. Recent studies show steeply declining populations. That’s because this shark’s large fins are the chief ingredient of shark fin soup. As with other shark species, the whitetip faces mounting fishing pressure throughout its range.
