Carcharhinus leucas
The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) (Zambezi shark in Africa, and Lake Nicaragua shark in Nicaragua) is a shark that lives worldwide in warm, shallow waters along coasts and in rivers. Photographers know this shark for its aggressive nature, predilection for warm shallow water, and presence in brackish and freshwater systems.
Bull sharks can thrive in both salt and fresh water. Hence, they can travel far up rivers. For this reason, they have travelled up the Mississippi River as far as Alton, Illinois. That’s about 700 miles (1100 km) from the ocean!
That said, few freshwater human-shark interactions have been recorded. Those that do occur, however, can be deadly. Larger bull sharks are probably responsible for the majority of near-shore shark attacks.
Unlike the river sharks, bull sharks are not true freshwater sharks. This is true despite their ability to survive in freshwater habitats.
