Dragons of Legend
Despite their fearsome name, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a species of lizard. They are, however, the largest living lizards today. The biggest grow to a length of 3 metres (10 ft) and weigh up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb).
Though usually slow-moving, these lizards can run in brief sprints up to 20 miles per hour. It’s for that reason that they dominate their island ecosystems. Living on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Padar, Rinca, Flores and Gili Motang, these creatures hunt live prey. In fact, they’ve been known to kill wild pigs in seconds.
Reclusive, dangerous, and possibly even venomous, these real-life dragons tempt the intrepid photographer. The perfect imagine catches evolution in the act.
