Scorpaenopsis oxycephala
The tasseled scorpionfish, Scorpaenopsis oxycephala, is a carnivorous fish that boasts venomous spines. It lives in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There, it can reach a length of 36 cm (14 in) and can vary considerably in color. Unusual in appearance, adults are bearded. That is, they have a number of tassels just below the jaw.
These fascinating fish inhabit reef slopes, from 1 to 35 meters deep. The problem is that when these fish are in shallow waters, swimmers may accidentally step on them. This can cause painful injury, due to the fish’s venomous spines.
