Home to Spawn

Salmon is the common name for several species of ray-finned fish in the family Salmonidae. Other fish in the same family include trout, char, grayling and whitefish.

They come from tributaries of the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Typically, these fish hatch in fresh water and then migrate to the ocean. Later, they return to fresh water to reproduce. (That said, some populations live in fresh water through their lives.) Folklore has it that the fish return to the exact spot where they hatched to spawn. In fact, tracking studies show this to be mostly true.

Granted, some returning fish stray and spawn in different freshwater systems. However, the percent of straying varies according to species. Homing behavior seems to depend on the acuity of the species’ olfactory memory.
