Muraenidae

Moray eels are large eels of the family Muraenidae. They are cosmopolitan—as in, they live all over the world. These eels may live in all sorts of marine environments, and even sometimes in brackish waters.

There are approximately 200 species of these eels in 15 genera. Though they live all over, they most commonly thrive in in warm waters. There, they enjoy subtropical coral reefs to depths of 450 ft (150 m).

Spotted and carnivorous, these eels sometimes attack when disturbed. Their sense of smell is sharp. This helps them seek out prey. Furthermore, morays can hunt cooperatively. Sometimes smaller eels enlist the help of giant eels. Hand-feeding of these eels is banned today. That’s because hand feeding is one of the main causes of eel attacks.
