Small, coastal penguins
Rockhopper penguins are among the smaller species of penguins. That’s because full grown, they are only about 20 inches in height. Like many penguins, rockhoppers have a white belly and the rest of their body is black. Some characteristics that differentiate them from the other penguins are their red eyes, orange beak and pink webbed feet. Additionally, they boast yellow and black spiky feathers on their heads.
The southern rockhopper breeds on the Falkland Islands, Argentina and Chile. Meanwhile, Eastern rockhopper penguins breed mostly on Campbell Island in New Zealand.
Rockhopper penguins usually find their habitat in rocky shorelines. There, they make nests and burrows in tall grasses called tussocks.
