Long-tailed penguin

The gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is a penguin species that lives in Antarctica. This species is famous for the loud trumpeting sound it emits with its head thrown back.

In addition to its distinctive vocalization, this penguin can be identified by the wide, white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head. Further, the penguin displays a bright, orange-red bill. It’s webbed feet are a pale, whitish-pink. Finally, it has a fairly long tail. This is, in fact, the most prominent tail of all penguins.

As the gentoo penguin waddles along the snow, its tail sticks out behind, sweeping from side to side. It’s for this reason that the species’ scientific name is Pygoscelis, which means “rump-tailed”.

As for the name “Papua,” this is a misnomer. When Johann Reinhold Forster, a naturalist, circumnavigated the world with Captain James Cook, he falsely assumed that the species occurred in Papua New Guinea.
