Tanysiptera

Paradise kingfishers (genus Tanysiptera) are tree kingfishers that live in Australasia. The name Tanysiptera comes from Classical Greek, where tanusipteros means “long-feathered”. They earned their name because birds in this genus have distinctive, long tail streamers.

These are colorful, small birds. With compact bodies, they perch on small branches in the tropical forest canopies. Meanwhile, they nest in termite mounds or in holes in trees. To find food, they swoop to the ground. It’s for this reason that’s they are found on the mid to low canopy, as opposed to higher up.
