Rivoli’s hummingbird is a large hummingbird, and the only member of the genus Eugenes. It’s also called the magnificent hummingbird. That’s because of it’s beautiful, purple-blue plumage.
These hummingbirds breed in mountains from the southwestern United States to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. There, they inhabit the edges and clearings of oak forests at altitudes from about 2000 m up to the timberline.
Though usually mountain birds, during the breeding season they live around ravines. In mountain areas of southern Arizona and New Mexico, they feed in open meadows where flowers are abundant.
