Soaring Seabirds

This large, oceanic bird has long narrow wings, with some species boasting wingspans greater than 10 feet (3.3 m). They live mainly in southern oceans. However, three kinds inhabit the North Pacific.

Despite their giant size, these birds are highly efficient in the air. They use both dynamic soaring and slope soaring to cover great distances with little exertion.

In order to eat, they feed on squid, fish, and krill. Their predatory methods include scavenging, surface seizing, and diving.

Albatrosses nest mostly on remote oceanic islands. In fact, several species will often nest together. Males and females form pair bonds over several years, with the use of “ritualised dances”, that last for the life of the pair.
