Ring of Fire

The Cascade Range, or Cascades, is a mountain range of western North America. A long ripple along the coastline, it extends from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. That’s because the Cascades are part of the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire—the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean.

In the Cascades, one finds both non-volcanic and volcanic mountains. Of these, the North Cascades are non-volcanic, while the High Cascades are volcanic.

All volcanic eruptions in the contiguous United States over the last 200 years have been from Cascade volcanoes. Furthermore, the Cascade Range is a part of the American Cordillera, a nearly continuous chain of mountain ranges (cordillera) that form the western “backbone” of North America, Central America, and South America.

Famous not only for its geology but also for its beauty, this area beckons the curious traveler. That’s because this region offers temperate rainforests with moss-covered trees as well as snowy peaks and rocky spires. Here, ferns and mushrooms litter the forest floor. Meanwhile, bald eagles swoop from the skies. From Wenatchee fall colors to aerial views of Glacier Peak, this region offers amazing sights for photographers and visitors alike.
