Tropical and Remote
The Kingdom of Tonga is a Polynesian country comprising 169 islands. Only 36 of these islands, however, are inhabited.
The country’s lush, rugged archipelago boasts a surface area of 290 square miles (750 sq km). Yet the islands scatter over 270,000 square miles (700,000 sq km) of southern Pacific Ocean. This makes the kingdom both one of the largest and one of the smallest countries on earth.
Though 100,651 people live in this sovereign state, 70% of them reside on the main island of Tongatapu. For that reason, the remainder of this archipelago contains uninhabited wilderness and deep azure ocean.
Whale enthusiasts from around the world travel to Tonga in order to legally swim with humpback whales.
