A Continent of Islands
Oceania is a geographic region comprising Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia and Australasia. Spanning the eastern and western hemispheres, Oceania covers an area of 8,525,989 square kilometres. Though mostly composed of sea and ocean, this region houses a population of 40 million.
Though this continent is the smallest in the world by landmass, it spans a huge part of the globe. In fact, Oceania makes up most of the islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Islands of this continent range from those belonging to Japan and Hawaii in the north, to those considered part of Chile and New Zealand in the south. While some island chains, like Micronesia, are self-governed, others here are part of Australia, New Zealand, or even protectorates of France!
Here, sandy beaches roll out to sunny seas. Some of the most beautiful reefs lie in this part of the world. Likewise, this area’s atolls and small islands are some of the most remote places on earth.
