Iceland in Miniature
This area is a peninsula situated to the west of Borgarfjörður, in western Iceland. People call it Iceland in Miniature because the area contains so many national sites. These include the Snæfellsjökull volcano, regarded as one of the symbols of Iceland.
With its height of 1446 m, this volcano is the highest mountain on the peninsula. Due to its height, on clear days the volcano is visible from Reykjavík. That’s a distance of about 120 km! Even more scenic, at the maountain’s peak lies a glacier (jökull means “glacier” in Icelandic).
With its majesty and drama, it’s no wonder that this region has inspired great writers throughout the ages. The mountain was the setting of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by French author Jules Verne. Furthermore, the peninsula is one of the main settings in the Laxdœla saga. The peninsula was, according to this saga, the birthplace of the first West Norse member of the Varangian Guard, Bolli Bollasson.
