Island Paradise
This part of Polynesia stretches over 1,200 miles of South Pacific Ocean. Despite its vast area, however, it contains only 1,609 square miles of land. That’s because this region is packed with shallow, scenic waters. Huge, turquoise vistas await visitors, with 118 sunny islands to explore.
This Ocean kingdom includes five groupings of islands. Largest is the Society Islands, including both Windward and Leeward sections. Next are the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Gambier, Marquesas and Austral Islands.
Though people live on 67 different islands in this region, Tahiti is the most populous. It’s city of Papeete houses the region’s Capitol. Furthermore, the area’s highest peak, Mount Orohena, is located on this island.
Aside from Tahiti, some other important atolls and islands here include Ahē, Bora Bora, Hiva ‘Oa, Huahine, Mai’ao, Maupiti, Mo’orea, Nuku Hiva Taha’a, Tupua’i, and Tūpai.
