Glaciers, Ice Fields and Bighorn Sheep
Banff National Park is Canada‘s oldest national park. Some say it’s also the most iconic. Established in 1885, it sprawls across the Canadian Rockies. In terms of travel, the park is located 70-miles west of Calgary, in the province of Alberta.
The park boasts mountainous terrain, with numerous glaciers and icefields. Vistas here tempt the eyes and lure the senses. However, there’s more to this region that spectacular alpine landscapes. This region’s dense coniferous forest provides home to copious woodland creatures. Some animals are large and other are small, but all have adapted to their mountain habitat.
Elk, caribou, moose and mule deer feast on grassy ledges. Meanwhile, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear and black bear roam elevations high and low, searching for water and food. Visitors may even catch a glimpse of the Rocky Mountain pika, hoary marmot, gray wolf, mountain lion, or even a wolverine.
Visitors here may stay at the Banff Springs Hotel or Chateau Lake Louise. These lovely hotels grew around around the Canadian Railway System, which was instrumental in developing the park.
Premier photography locations include Lake Louise and Moraine Lake at sunrise. Many of the most famous viewpoints are accessible from the highways and parkways that cut across the park, but most of the backcountry locations require overnight backpacking and camping skills.
Once at Banff, visitors have the option of traveling further north to Jasper National Park. The Icefields Parkway (or Highway 93) extends from Lake Louise to connect these two amazing treasures.
