Grasslands and Faults
The Carrizo Plain is a large, enclosed grassland plain, approximately 50 miles long and up to 15 miles across. This area is important because California is one of the most populated states in the U.S. Without protections, California’s native grasslands could be lost forever.
Despite its natural beauty, this park lies only 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles, in San Luis Obispo County. It contains 246,812-acres and is the largest single native grassland remaining in California. Because of its semi-arid climate, the area lacks trees or other large plant life.
Important sites here include Painted Rock as well as San Andreas Fault.
