Stretches of Sandstone
The Coyote Buttes are a region of buttes which lie in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of the United States. Though buttes are common on the southwestern U.S., they are rare elsewhere in the world. That’s because they are usually sandstone. A “butte” is an isolated hill, with steep sides and a flat top.
This area of wilderness spans from Utah to Arizona. It makes up one of the most scenic parts of the United States, especially since Zion National Park is located only a few hours away.
One of the highlights of the this area is the incredible sandstone formation known as The Wave. This sandstone swirl displays the incredible diversity of shapes in this arid part of the world.
The Bureau of Land Management limits visitors to the area to 20 a day. Even the lucky few who get permits must hike several hours to reach the buttes. Intrepid photographers aim to visit in the winter, when permits are more plentiful and light dances off The Wave at perfect angles.
