The Mountain Kingdom
In Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the regions of Alaska, Chugach and Wrangell-Saint Elias converge to create what some call the “mountain kingdom of North America.” This spectacular wilderness includes the continent’s largest assemblage of glaciers. It also contains the greatest collection of peaks above 16,000 feet. For example, Mount St. Elias, at over 18,000 ft, is the United States’ the second highest peak.
Though this region boasts many natural attractions, perhaps the best-know are its glaciers. Malaspina Glacier, for example, is the the largest piedmont glacier in North America. This means this it’s a valley glacier that spills out onto relatively flat plains, where it spreads into a bulb-like lobe.
By contrast, Hubbard Glacier is the the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska. Meaning that this glacier meets open water. Finally, the Bagley Icefield covers much of the park’s interior, which includes 60% of the permanently ice-covered terrain in Alaska.
This icy wilderness creates an otherworldly landscape, seen only by an intrepid few. Getting there is a struggle, shooting the perfect image, a journey. But in the end, it’s worth it. Because this area is like nowhere else in the world.
