Islands and Fjords

Prince William Sound is an ocean inlet on the southern coast of Alaska. This island-studded body of water is surrounded by the steep and glaciated mountains of Chugach National Forest. Because of it’s natural beauty, this inland sea draws photographers and visitors by the thousands.

This sound’s location on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula makes it an important spot for shipping. Most famously, the sound’s largest port is Valdez. This port marks the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. However, there’s more to this area than shipping! People also live and work in the towns of Cordova and Whittier. Meanwhile, the Alaska native villages of Chenega and Tatitlek lie nestled in this remote landscape.

Small islands dot the marine landscape. Of these, Montague Island, Hinchinbrook Island, and Hawkins Island for a barrier separating the sound from the Gulf of Alaska. Other islands await beyond stretches of icy water. Meanwhile, sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and even humpback whales swim underneath.
