River of Ice
Matanuska Glacier runs through the Matanuska Valley, in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. At 27 miles long by 4 miles wide, it’s the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States. That’s because this glacier lies near the Glenn Highway, 100 miles north-east of Anchorage.
Like a slow-motion river, the glacier moves about 1 foot (30 cm) per day. It creeps down the valley, eventually feeding into the Matanuska River. Though the glacier moves, however, it’s end point has remained stationary for the last three decades. That’s because as the earth warms, ice disappears from the lower glacier through evaporation and melting.
Though this glacier is slowly shrinking, it’s still one of the most majestic arctic sites in the world. Jon’s images capture this leviathan, as it slowly carves its way through the Alaskan landscape.
